United States of America (Press Release) March 3, 2008 --
Organizational Background
Founded in 2006, United Urban Ministries is located in Jonesboro and Locust Grove and our mission is to provide food, emergency, and supportive services to men, women, and children without discrimination. We specialize in providing emergent, mobile food distribution services to the homeless population throughout the city of Atlanta. Our organization continues to lead the way in addressing poverty and lowering chronic hunger within the city.
Generally speaking, the population that we serve is the thirty thousand poorest residents of all of Metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. These “clients” are people who do not have enough income to support themselves and/or their families and are facing the brunt of federal, state, and city reform measures, one including high foreclosure rates. Included among them are the homeless, elderly, disabled, single parents, children, unemployed, working poor, and immigrants.
Our direct service programs include:
• Mobile Food Distribution- offers nutritious meals 6 days per week to homeless people throughout the city of Atlanta, serving over 1,895 meals per month.
• Food Bank- offers and distributes free perishable and non-perishable food items for families facing crisis.
• Transportation- provides transportation services for those in need of medical, employment, and/or other outreach service appointments.
Project Description
To address the need of hunger and homelessness, United Urban Ministries offers an array of supportive services with a holistic approach in serving the homeless and low income population. UUM has 2 full time staff members as well as a host of community volunteers who execute the daily operations of feeding and distributing food to the less fortunate members of our community. We build and coordinate the religious and community resources needed for referrals for additional services.
Summary of Need
There are many people in crisis in the poverty-stricken pockets of the Atlanta Metropolitan area. Homelessness, unemployment, poverty, and health concerns are growing issues that directly affect the inner city population. An increasing number of low-income working families are struggling just to make ends meet. UUM has been a consistent and vital food provider in the city for the past two years. We provide this diverse population of men, women, and children with on-site supportive services to fight hunger. To our knowledge, there are very few organizations within the city that provide mobile food distribution six days per week to the thirty thousand homeless members of the community in Atlanta.
