MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. – Ashley Tutors (www.ashleytutors.com) has hired an energetic and diverse team from six countries to put into practice the Ashley Tutors’ motto: LIVE! Learning Is Very Entertaining. The fresh tutoring team has been assembled to make learning enjoyable through the use of kinesthetic learning, a style that takes place when a student carries out a physical activity. Based on the kinesthetic teaching methods of Ashley Fagel, a Maryland certified teacher working in Montgomery County, Md., Ashley Tutors offers in-home, one-on-one academic help in any subject to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
A recent UCLA study of Finnish adolescents showed that only about half of children diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, exhibit the cognitive defects commonly associated with the condition. Many kids who might appear to suffer from ADHD may in fact be kinesthetic learners. Kinesthetic learners account for 45 percent of the population, according to Muneera Spence, Oregon State University professor. The study also revealed that the prevalence and symptoms of the disorder are similar in different populations whether or not medicine was used.
“It is important to remember that we all learn differently,” said Josh Chernikoff, the Ashley Tutors team member who personally interviews, investigates and selects each individual tutor. “Many students are kinesthetic learners who benefit from this philosophy, which encourages students to move physically in order to concentrate their energy on the academic task.”
The Ashley Tutors team focuses on a kinesthetic method that allows a student a two-minute motor break to move around for every eight minutes of learning. The breaks taken when using kinesthetic learning styles provide our tutors a chance to get to know each student better. This creates a strong foundation for a successful working and learning relationship.
“An elementary school student I tutor had a very tough time concentrating on her lessons,” said Joe Pacelli, a senior at Georgetown University in the McDonough School of Business. “After taking two-minute breaks to stretch or play ‘Simon Says’ she comes back completely focused and excited to learn. These breaks are what kinesthetic learning is all about. It is hard for anybody to sit still for an hour, and a five minute “stretch time” during a session helps my students think and work better in the end.”
Ashley Tutors serves students in Montgomery County, Md.Rockville, Potomac, Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring and Chevy Chase; Washington, D.C.; and Northern Virginia including Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church. Ashley Tutors provides instruction in most subjects.
