I sent you a long fax message about five years ago, asking for your support to help presence lake Imboassica of Macae . Here is another request. A Brazilian soldier from this city passed away a few years ago, without reeiving the medal and diploma which was granted to all the UN's Blue Berets who served from 1945 to 1988 for the United Nations. Before I continue, I would like to transcribe part of a letter which was sent to ex-corporal Percival Furquim Vazon the 2nd of June, 1989. The letter in question was sent by Mr. Colin S McGregor - Deputy Director of the field Operations Division of the UNITED NATIONS, ref. : LOG/OPS 1-14. The letter was addressed to Mr. Percival Furquim Vaz - Avenida Otavio Mangabeira, 50 - Sereia - Itapua - 41.600 - Salvador, Bahia - BRAZIL. Dean Mr. Vaz, I refer to you letter of April 1989. We all took great pride in leaming that the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize had been awarded to the United Nations Peacekeeping Troops around the world. The Secretary-General travelled to Oslo in order to accept the award on behalf of all the 500,000 or so recepients who have served with the UN since its inception. The UN Medal confered on you at the end of your service with UNEF is the most important symbol of the Organization's gratitude to you for your service with the United Nations. At this point of time, there is no further certificate relative tho the award of the Nobel Peace Prize. However, it is possible one may be prepared in the near future for distribution to the National Forces for forwarding to individuals having served with the various peacekeeping Missions.I would recommended that in several months time you inquire with the Brazilian Armed Forces. I wish to thank you for your contribution to peacekeeping and for your continued interest. I wish you well in your future endeavours. Ex-corporal Percival felt very prout when he received the confirmation from the United Nation that he had won the Nobel Peace Prize and that about nine thousand Brazilian Blue Berets had also received the same awarded by the king of Norway in Oslo. Percival received his 1988 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE and diploma on the 25th. of October, 2002 in Brasilia ..... almost fouteen years afther he had "received" the most important nor its Ministry of Foreign Affairs took any notice. The Armed Forces preferred to ignore the condecorations wich were awarded to nine thousand men and women of the Brazian Armed Forces! President Sarney received a plea from Percival to help him received his Nobel Prize, but his request was ignored. Through the support of some foreign journalist and embassies in Brasilia, Percival managed to obtain his righful possessions ..... the Nobel Medal and Diploma. As not received their medals and diplomas yet, you could now sign a "especial presidential decree" to honour those who have been forgotten for so many years. Dozeans, perhaps hundreds have already passes away, their familes could received the medals and diplomas posthumously. The Brazilian government cold also condecorate all of those who have served with the United Nations from 1945 to 2002 ..... to compensate for its failure to recognize the value of the Nobel Prize in 1988.
