City of New Haven Mayor presents Proclamation to Shafiq Abdussabur

(Free-Press-Release.com) March 10, 2008 -- On Sunday March 9, 2008, City of New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. joined with the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc. and presented Shafiq Abdussabur a Proclamation from the City of New Haven for receiving the 2008 Man of the Year. The event took place at the 64th Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc. Founders Day Award Luncheon at Fantasia located at 404 Washington Avenue, North Haven Connecticut.

Abdussabur stated that his work is driven by the need to curtail gun violence among America’s youth. He sited statistics from the American Pediatrics that gun violence is the leading cause of death in America for youth and the number one cause of death for Black males ages 15-25 years old.

Shafiq Abdussabur is a 12 year veteran of the New Haven Police Department. He currently serves at Chief Executive Officer of the New Haven Police Department.

Shafiq R.F. Abdussabur is the Founder and Director of CTRIBAT (Children & Teens-Retreat) Institute For Social Development, which in the summer of 2006 reduced gun violence by 400% in the Dixwell Avenue area of New Haven, Connecticut. He has been working with Inner City Youth since 1985. Shafiq is an active law enforcement officer in the State of Connecticut with over 12 year of Community Base Police Training and experience. In January of 2007, he was appointed Coordinator of the City of New Haven Street Outreach Workers Program by City of New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. In 2007, the City of New Haven posted the lowest violent crime rates in the department’s history. Officer Abdussabur’s innovative method of community policing and community outreach is becoming the premier methodology of law enforcement agencies, government policy and social development through out New England and the Tri-State area.
