Boy recovering at home after running into deputy's vehicle

A Pensacola boy who ran into a Kawasaki Mule after the Pensacola Beach Mardi Gras parade Sunday was recovering at home on Monday.

Escambia County sheriff's Deputy Matt Baxter was driving the vehicle — which is similar to a golf cart — when the 10-year-old ran from between two parked cars in a lot on Via de Luna, said Lt. Gary Montee, who heads the Sheriff's Office substation on the beach.

The boy fell backward, hitting his head on the ground, Montee said. After the wound was stapled at a hospital, the child is recuperating at home, the officer said.

The Florida Highway Patrol, which investigated the incident, determined that Baxter was not at fault.
