Some of the biggest business deals are closed out on the Golf Course. It’s not all about who is the best golfer. It’s about spending up to 5 hours with people with nothing much to do but talk and hopefully have a little fun. It’s not bad to have a little trick up your sleeve when the mood is quiet and the conversation is a little slow.

When is the right time to bring up business?

Believe it or not, it’s probably better not to talk business on the course at all. This is the time to bond and get to know each other on a personal level. Find out what you have in common. Could be family, friends, hobbies, travel, pets or whatever else might come up. If all goes well on the course, the 19th hole is where your business is going to get done. Hanging out in the club house having a drink or meal after the round will be invaluable to your business relationship.

What can you do out on the course to make a lasting impression?

Almost everyone likes a person with a sense of humor that is fun to be around. Have something in your arsenal that can break the ice when it seems everything is getting a little quiet and the round is dragging on. Make sure that you think the time may be right and it is not something that will offend someone without a sense of humor themselves.

What is a good suggestion to break the ice with something funny?

A novelty golf gift you purchase that is unique and something that will completely surprise your playing partners can be priceless. A novelty golf putter such as the one made by BlueBall Sports (http://www.blueballsports.com) is a perfect example of a novelty golf product that will bring the house down if the time and people you are playing with is right. Called the Putt-Her, it works like the old tip n’ strip pens and looks like a normal putter, until you turn it over to putt, a pin up girl magically appears on the shaft. Just get to the green like nothing is different and go to line up your putt. Then, when you are ready to putt, turn the putter over and voila, everyone will liven up. Obviously this particular novelty golf putter would be geared to a group of male players but you get the idea.

It’s moments like these that can make your business on the golf course become successful. Just remember to pick the perfect moment when the round is slow and a little humor out of nowhere can jump start the round and take your business relationships to the next level.
