United States of America (Press Release) March 12, 2008 --
A study in Hungary looked at quiet and loud snorers with 37% of men and 21% of women reporting loud snoring with pauses in breathing. Both quiet and loud snorers reported significant increase in the prevelance of hypertension, myocardial infarction and stroke even after doing a statistical adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, diabetes, level of education, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Loud snoring was also associated with increase in helth care utilization.
The current issue of Sleepmatters from the National Sleep Foundation declared that Oral Appliances for treating sleep disordered breathing was a therapy whose time has come. Dr Ira Shapira is nationally known for bringing Dental Sleep Medicine to the public eye.
CPAP has long been the standard treatment for sleep apnea. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has accepted oral appliances as a first line treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea. The AASM also accepted oral appliances as an alternative treatment for severe apnea when patients do not tolerate CPAP. There are a lot of patients who do not tolerate CPAP, in fact studies have shown that only 23-45% of patients given CPAP use it. Even among CPAP users most average only 4-5 hours a night and not the recommended 7 1/2 hours a night. The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine endorses the position of the AASM.
Dental Sleep Medicine is coming to the rescue of snorers and sleep apneics. Oral appliances are preferred over CPAP by most patients offered a choice. The current issue of Sleep shows snoring increases medical costs and cardiovascular accidents as well as hypertension. Snoring is no joke and may be your warning of impending disaster. Sleep Apnea Dentists who treat Snoring and Sleep Apnea with oral appliances have the ability to save lives and decrease medical expenses.
This study shows that snoring should never be considered benign. Previous studies have shown a 300% increase in motor vehicle accidents in snorers as well as poorer grades and an increase in ADHD in children who snore. Snoring is the warning alarm to look out for sleep apnea. DO NOT IGNORE THIS IMPORTANT WARNING!
Unfortunately many physicians are not aware of Dental Sleep Medicine or the beneficial effects of Oral Appliances for treating Sleep Apnea and Snoring. Dr Ira L Shapira a Gurnee, Illinois dentist wants to change that. Dr Shapira has founded I HATE CPAP LLC to increase the knowledge of Dental Sleep Medicine.
