Canada (Press Release) March 21, 2008 --
It doesn’t matter what starts the cycle, but it does matter what stops it. When some people are experiencing mild depression, one solution is to eat. The more blue they feel, the more they eat. The more they eat, the more weight they gain. The more weight they gain, the more blue they feel, and again, the more they eat.
Not only is the cycle hard to stop, but it’s terrifying to those who are trapped in it. Renae, age 26, explains, “When I feel sad, I eat. I know it’s emotional eating, but it makes me feel better at the time. The next morning though I feel really bad about myself and get grossed out at the weight I haven’t been successful in losing. Then I spend the day feeling bad and thinking I’m repulsing people and then I go home and eat some more.”
Renae is like most people who are trying to lose weight. However the effects of weight-gain are destructive. Renae also explains she deals with heavy depression and has suicidal thoughts. “It may be unrelated to my weight, but when I feel hopeless it’s easy to blame it on that. I wish I could take it out of the forefront of my mind for once and feel good about my body.”
There are many other causes of weight-gain; whether it is over-eating, stress, medication or lack of exercise. But the truth is, the public is only beginning to see the effects of depression and weight. The people who are trapped in it are receiving blame, disapproval from others, and experiencing rejection over and over. The depression is only then becoming worse, and becomes a miserable lifestyle for those trapped in it.
There are a few mild remedies that can ease the depression, while helping with weight-loss. One of those is as simple as taking a walk around the block. Not only can it get you out of the house and away from home stresses, it can get your body moving in a healthy direction. Another simple way to ease out of depression and ease back into health is getting enough sleep. Your body loses the most weight when it is rested and strong. Lastly, but most important, discuss with your doctor about options. Whether it is changing the medication you are on, finding a support system, or simply finding a method of starting a healthier lifestyle, your doctor can advise you on what is right for you.
