Watkins Hire Ltd supplied two 30-foot containers installed with electrics and modified to accept services and eight off 20kw fan coils providing close control air conditioning.
“The Problem” – Watkins chiller hire were contacted by the client to provide a mobile UPS system complete with Chiller and air handling unit and containers to house the UPS systems, The client was supplying the end user with temporary UPS equipment in the containers that needed to be kept secure but mobile and operational through the hire period.
“The Solution” – The client contacted many suppliers but none could offer a complete package, one could supply the air conditioning. Watkins Hire were able supply all of the equipment, carry out all of the electrical works, supply and modify the containers to the clients exacting specifications. Watkins Chiller Hire supplied a complete package of equipment to include a pair of containers complete with electrical installation and air conditioning. The Air conditioning plant consisted of a pair of KwikCHILL 80 Trane Aquastream 2 air cooled liquid chillers and eight off KwikCHILL AHU 20 20kw fan coils. Also Watkins Hire were the only contractor that could deliver the equipment to site in the time scale allowed in order for the project to run on schedule.
Specialist Hire Manager Chris Easterlow said – “It was evident from our first meeting with the client that this project was not going to be an ordinary installation, the requirements that the client needed were beyond the specifications of a normal data centre air conditioning application.
We supplied two 30 foot containers for a start, as these were not available for an eight week period so two 40Ft containers were found and cut to size, this allowed us the flexibility to adapt the containers at the factory rather than on site. The containers were modified at our Midlands operation centre, to include the three phase distribution board, lighting, switches and fused spurs. The containers were then fitted with water tight roof boxes to allow the installation of the customers power cables (on each container there were 28 X 50mm input cables and 18 X 50mm Output cables), these roof boxes were constructed and installed by Watkins Hire Ltd to an approved design. When the fitting works on the containers were completed the client was invited to the site to inspect the containers and mark out exactly where their UPS equipment was going to be sited within as to ensure no delays on site when the equipment was delivered. The equipment was delivered to site on the day it was required and the client continued to work on site to install their power and equipment into the containers until they were ready for the air conditioning to be installed. This was completed to the client’s timescale two weeks after the containers were first delivered to the end users site. The air conditioning was fully operational within three days of the first commissioning engineer arriving on site.”
Watkins Hire Ltd were again called to site the following week with an engineer on standby when all of the equipment was tested (just in case any assistance was required by the end user), none was required and the whole system was tested at 120% of its design parameter and the air conditioning did not fail to hold the climate at the required duty.
The equipment specified for each container for the project was a KwikCHILL80 fluid chiller connected to 5 X KwikCHILL 20 Air Handling Units via a flexible hose-work system and 4-way manifold. This gave each container the required duty with a little spare as back-up to the system for solar gains on the container (this solar gain was minimized by the painting of a silver reflective roof – specified by Watkins Hire Ltd).
