TALLAHASSEE, FL, March 25, 2008– Take Stock in Children and the Helios Education Foundation announced a unique partnership that will provide more than 2,100 low-income children with fully paid tuition scholarships, mentors, and hope. Leading the partnership with a $1 million gift, Vince Roig, Chairman of the Helios Education Foundation, stated the importance of everyone’s commitment to provide educational access for Florida’s low-income children.
"Helios Education Foundation is focused on creating opportunities in education that lead to postsecondary success for deserving students," said the foundation's Chairman Vince Roig. "We're excited to announce our partnership and gift of $1 million to Take Stock in Children toward scholarships, additional mentors and tutors for more than 2,100 students in Florida. We believe education changes lives, and we support middle school students and their commitment to achieve, promise to learn and plan to succeed all the way through college."

The announcement was made as part of Take Stock in Children’s Rally in Tally which recognizes its mentors and demonstrates the impact of its scholarship and mentoring program to lawmakers in Tallahassee. More than 1,500 students and mentors statewide traveled to Tallahassee to meet their local legislators and show their support for the organization that is changing the lives of low-income children and working to break the cycle of academic failure and poverty.
Governor Charlie Crist spoke to the students, mentors and partners in attendance and emphasized the importance of each child graduating from high school and attending college. Governor Crist presented Take Stock in Children’s highest honor, The Champion of Children Award, to Vince Roig in appreciation of his leadership.
The Florida Lottery, a statewide sponsor of Take Stock in Children for more than 10 years, sponsors the Take Stock in Children Rally in Tally. The Florida Mentoring Partnership has recognized the Florida Lottery for achieving outstanding participation and leadership for mentoring. In addition to providing funding to raise awareness of the statewide need for mentoring, the Lottery supports and encourages its employees to give their time to assist children in learning.
Outback Steakhouse, a founding sponsor of Take Stock in Children, provided lunch for the crowd of more than 1, 500 people in record time. Paul Avery, President of Outback Steakhouse, served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Take Stock in Children for over two years.
