Rising prison population prevents opportunity for some former inmates
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 27, 2008 --
Former prison inmates are providing inside information to those who are facing time behind bars and profiting in the process.
With one out of every 100 adult Americans in prison today and tens of thousands more being sentenced to prison terms every year, there is now a huge demand for information on how to prepare for time in prison. Some savvy former inmates are capitalizing on this demand by offering consulting services, prison preparation courses and detailed how to guides.
The most recent such guide is entitled Federal Prison- A Comprehensive Survival Guide written by Jonathan Richards. Richards, (who writes under a pseudonym) was convicted of student financial aid fraud in 2006 and was sentenced to six month in federal prison. Incarcerated in a Federal Medical Center with inmates doing multi decade sentences and even life, Richards used his time in federal prison to interview hundreds of inmates on their experience in the system.
What results is as the title suggests, a comprehensive guide for anyone who faces time in federal prison. Richards addresses a multitude of questions and concerns that any inmate-to-be will inevitably face. A few of the topics he covers include dealing with BOP staff, work assignments, food, medical care and avoiding physical and sexual harassment.
‘Prison is quite literally a different world. The rules that govern you and me on the outside are quite different on the inside. Indeed, in many cases, these rules don’t even apply. And the truth is that the vast majority of lawyers, no matter how well trained in the legal system, have little to no sound advice to give when it comes to the incarceration stage of their client’s legal process’, says Richards.
‘I still remember my lawyer’s words immediately after I was sentenced’, remarks Richards.
‘She said that it had been a pleasure representing me and wished me luck. There I was alone on the steps of the courthouse with a million questions running through my head and no idea where to turn for answers. I had no idea what to expect or how to prepare for the next six months of my life. That was the catalyst for this whole project. Prison is difficult enough as it is. It shouldn’t be made even more trying simply because of a lack of information. I’m proud that I have been able to use this experience to provide that information and help others who are going through this trying time.’
Richards completed the guide while incarcerated and upon his release in 2007 made it available on the Internet. The response to date has been enormous with defendants and their families from across the country turning to it to help them better understand what they face in the months and years to come.
