Australia, Commonwealth of (Press Release) March 28, 2008 --
The launch of Urban Ecological Systems (UES) on Wednesday April 2nd 2008 will include a public information session on “The Future of Food" - a view to urban agriculture and feeding our cities via sustainable food production systems. Director General of the NSW Department of State and Regional Development, Mr Barry Buffier will open the event at the NSW Trade & Investment Centre, on the 47th floor of the MLC Centre, corner of King and Castlereagh Streets in Sydney at 6pm.
The event will host a panel of expert speakers on sustainability and the future of food supplies for our cities.
UES is responsible for the innovation of Ecocity farms in Australia which have received world-wide attention with their new prototype of a farming system developed in Australia, since winning a recent episode of ABC-TV's The New Inventors program with Technology & Innovation Award judge, George Lewin describing Ecocity Farms as "an idea whose time has come".
UES developed this unique Ecocity Farm as a water, energy and space efficient commercial aquaponic system packaged into a turn-key, IT supported retail business, suitable for use where conventional agriculture is not viable - including urban areas and remote or environmentally sensitive locations.
President of The Urban Agriculture Network (TUAN), Jaq Smit said "the hi-tech market-garden called "Ecocity Farm" can produce vegetables and fish on five percent of the water used by traditional farming methods to produce the same volume of product. 'Ecocity' is designed as a practical entry for small business into the food chain. The Sydney and New York new farming methods may be worth serious study and support. Ecocity Farm can create enough fish protein and vegetables on one quarter acre to feed 300 families."
Urban Ecological System's CEO, David Watson said "We know there's demand for the Ecocity Farm: we're speaking with people all around the world who are interested in it.”
UES engaged ASSOB to help take the company through the simple but structured stages of fundraising that results in sufficient cash, without unreasonably diluting the founder’s equity. ASSOB Managing Director, Brookes McTavish, said that many innovative Australian companies are in crisis due to a lack of capital to grow their businesses.
“Australia has an enormous bank of unlisted investment opportunities with high growth potential. Unfortunately there are few mechanisms to help them achieve that potential. The Australian Small Scale Offerings Board brings the investors and the companies together in one platform.”
UES has won the following awards:
• Winner – ABC New Investors, 2006
• Winner – INR Technology & Innovation Award, 2006
• Nominated – Wall Street Journal Asia – Asian Innovation Awards2007
