United States of America (Press Release) April 3, 2008 --
Raleigh, NC: Orrick Nepomuceno, CPC, founding partner of KAON Consulting, Inc., offered his expert advice to Nation’s Restaurant News for their article, Cost-wary Restaurants Lay Off Large Numbers. Nepomuceno was selected for his accumulated knowledge in recruitment, handling prospective employees and employee retention practices.
The article focuses on concern for a mounting number of layoffs at restaurant companies. These layoffs have industry insiders worrying about long-term loss of talent as the foodservice industry tries to weather short-term economic troubles.
At least seven large restaurant companies have announced layoffs, putting thousands of people in the ranks of the unemployed. Nepomuceno is quoted as saying, “I’ve never seen anything with these kinds of cuts ever happen before.”
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 88 layoff actions in January in the category of accommodations and foodservice, which includes hotels and restaurants. Those actions accounted for more than 6,000 unemployment claims. That compares with 56 layoff actions and more than 4,000 claims in January 2007. Most of the recent layoffs affected middle level managers and corporate employees – experienced workers who may end up leaving the industry, observers said.
“The biggest long term risk for the industry from the recent layoffs is losing experienced veterans to other industries,” said Nepomuceno. “The midlevel, pre-executive positions are really the ones in danger... You will see a lot of people migrating away from the restaurant industry.”
The article went on to discuss companies who have been hit hardest by the layoffs and how some of the smaller businesses will be looking for growth opportunities. To read the article in full, visit Nation’s Restaurant News at http://www.nrn.com/article.aspx?id=351558.
