Stunning, healthy and eco-friendly spaces are a natural priority for leading designers, Owen & Caitlin Black, of Aloe Designs and Tanya McLean, of Mango Design Co. “Bringing the beauty and balance of the outdoors into our everyday living is something we wanted for our own homes,” notes Caitlin Black, Aloe Designs, garden design consultant.

Black continues, “Sourcing materials that are sustainable become part of an ongoing conversation - a way of thinking. We realize that while no single eco conscious product has zero impact, by asking more questions, looking at sustainable materials in new ways, and seeking out local products we fuel a cultural environment that is looking for green solutions.”

With Spring in full swing, this duo’s combined dining room and patio design sets the stage for relaxed outdoor living and entertaining. Each element is linked by its pure-lined aesthetic and connectivity to the larger environment. A distinctive statement is added to the gutter system with rain chains - bound to capture the senses when used to create a fountain effect while also filling a functional water barrel; which in turn is used to water the containers of edible plants on the patio.

Ethically produced wood flooring, environmentally responsible paints, and the screened bamboo trough that also functions as a living wall - all contribute to a positive environment for both its inhabitants and the larger ecosystem. The featured “harvest table” will get dinner conversation going, with its recyclable aluminum base, reclaimed cedar planks and trough of growing assorted herbs or vegetables.
