Don’t miss the opening. If you’ve never seen how a diamond is cut. Spectacular close up photography shows the cutting of the diamond by a diamond. It’s a fascinating sequence.
Set in the 1960's, the intriguing relationship develops between the only female executive (Demi Moore in a solid, grown-up performance) in the London Diamond Company and a long time custodian (another inventive characterization by Michael Caine). There is a common bond between them. She has been passed over numerous times for promotions that went to men, and he seems ready to retire, but unhappy with the retirement salary he will receive.
He has a plan, but needs her help. While trying to be suspenseful, the story beats come up a bit short - aka the phone that doesn’t work. And there are common story crutches - like a security man watching screens, who is enjoying a cupcake which distracts his attention. Convenient. Too convenient.
But rolling with all the story shortcomings, the film will keep you wondering “How did he do it?”
