HELP ACTS/Turning Points Stop DOMESTIC VIOLENCE! 2008 Women's Awareness/Empowerment Conference!
Introducing the Empowerment/Awareness Conference of 2008 - Women Meeting Challenges - Making Change - Special Guest Speak - Carolyn Thomas - Hosted by Bessie Winn Miss Black Georgia U.S.A. (2006)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) April 16, 2008 --
Of concern, is the increasing amount of Domestic Violence Abuse especially among the teens, in D.C. Metropolitan Area - specifically in Prince William County. Currently PWC Schools are averaging about 1 out of every 4 teenage females being abused, either physically or sexually, or otherwise coerced in to sexual behavior by there partner.
In 2005, PWC reported 574 teen pregnancies. In 2006, PWC reported 1, 605 juvenile arrests, 350 of them being Part 1 crimes (murder, rape, robbery, to name a few). In addition, substance and alcohol abuse related crimes have increased. The VA Dept of Education Annual Report stated that in 2006 there were 150 drug related incidents, and 56 alcohols.
ACTS/TurningPoints along with Liletta Thompson take these issues very seriously. Because of this, they are introducing a conference this spring, designed to bring awareness, support and resources on these very issues. The conference is entitled "Women Meeting Challenges-Making Change" and it is being held at Garfield Senior High School. The conference will address many topics; however our main focus is on Domestic Violence – eliminating it from our community and that includes starting with the youth. One Highlight among many of this conference is our Guest Speaker- Carolyn Thomas- she has appeared on Oprah and other media forums telling her story of surving domestic violence- and how domestic violence from her partner killed her mother and left her for dead!
We have gained local, National, and International attention and support. In addition, we will have information from the Department of Health, Department of Social Services; the Police Departments will be in uniform with resource info on Domestic Violence. Also in attendance will be the #1 R&B, Hip Hop Washington, D.C. radio station 93.9 WKYS there from 12-2 pm broadcasting live.
