This film is clearly a director’s version that ignores market-target consideration and conventional mainstream appeal. The production is rich, lavish, stylized and depression-era period. Amy Adams, lovely to look at, plays an exotically “kept” woman intent upon parlaying her ample personal charms into marriage of the suitor with the most security-assuring gold.

McDormand is an out-of-work combination of governess/household manager with a healthy backbone of common sense and morality - which gets in the way of her holding jobs. She desperately insinuates herself into Adams’ life in order to survive - and winds up inspiring the young gold digger to marry her true heart’s desire.

It’s a sparkling personal outing for Adams, flaunting her dazzling physical endowments and sophisticated comedy skills, and providing a gaping contrast with her pure-Disney performance in “Enchanted”. McDormand brings her consummate package, but is a bit past the time when she could be convincing in the romantic dimension of her role. Lovingly conceived and realized by Nalluri. Should be rated “R”.
