Water injection was used on fighter planes during WW2. The main objective was miles per hour, increasing ceiling limitations (how high they could fly), faster climb rates and other items that pertained to horsepower. A big boost in horsepower was directly attributed to the water injection.
Water injection is too complicated and expensive to warrant installation in most applications, but water vapor injecton, when properly installed, can and does take its place. Water vapor injection has increased the MPG on all types of vehicles by increasing efficiency, the same efficiency gains that increase horsepower. More efficient combustion increases miles per gallon and horsepower, the best of both worlds.
Water vapor allows the timing to be advanced without detonation (also known as pinging). Detonation can destroy an engine but by adding water vapor the flame propagation is slowed, the same as is the case with raising octane ratings, and the fuel is burned more completely giving a boost in MPG and power through more efficient use of the same amount of fuel. Usually, the only way to increase octane ratings is to buy more expensive fuels. Most race car fuels are rated at 99 octane, which is not available to most of us and would be prohibitively expensive if it was. There is a better and less expensive way to gain MPG and that’s with water vapor injection.
Water vapor injection can be used on cars with carburetors and manual timing or on the latest computerized vehicles. On the early models you have to rejet the carburetor plus reset the timing and if you run out of water you have to reset the timing back to original before damage is done to the engine. On later computer cars, the computer makes all the adjustments and will automatically set back the timing if any detonation is detected by the sensors. On most computerized cars a check engine light will come on and the fuel mixture will be increased if too lean a mixture is detected.
There truly is a way to save on fuel by using water, and it has been used and proven effective for at least 65 years. Water vapor is that way.
