United States of America (Press Release) April 17, 2008 --
Written by Duncan Brantley & Rick Reilly
Directed by George Clooney
Rated PG-13
Cast: George Clooney, Renee Zellweger, John Krasinski, Jonathan Pryce
Right from the start you are taken back to the 1930's. The scene with the cow is very fresh and funny. “Leatherheads” is a light hearted romp fictionalized from the roots of professional football.
Predicable story of 45-year-old Clooney and a bunch of other physically tough (though mostly younger), hard drinking and partying footballers who play for minimal compensation in the early days. Zellweger, looking fresh and juicy, is a female sports reporter known for her top-drawer writing, who is assigned to blow the lid off a scandal that will rock the growing sport.
She and Clooney go through the handsprings of professionalism vs romance vs politics – and romance wins out - surprise! The two stars are easy on the eyes and flesh out characters whose charm hooks us and reels us in. The ending, boy-gets-girl, lacks the punch we want for them. Commitments of Zellweger and/or Clooney probably forced shooting before the script was finely polished.
Randy Newman’s lively music serves to accent the action and hold the film together -- and you can get a glimpse of him playing the piano too.
Bottom line - an entertaining, fast paced film with lots of laughs. Good job Clooney!
