Apr 20, 2008 – 9th Degree Red Belt, Grand Master Alvaro Barreto from Rio de Janeiro is coming to California and offering a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar at Rodrigo Teixeira Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, 4706 North Grand Avenue, Covina, CA 91724 – Thursday and Friday, April 24-25, 2008 from 4-7PM.
Sports and Entertainment Celebrities, Mixed Martial Arts, Kickboxing, Karate, Boxing, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fans will work with Barreto for a rare instructional and interactive seminar. Barreto has been a black belt for over 40 years, making him a waling encyclopedia of the art. At 10 years of age, Barreto began training Jiu-Jitsu with Carlos & Helio Gracie. At 17, he was an instructor at “Academia Gracie” the original Gracie Academy in Ave. Rio Bronco, Centro, and Rio de Janeiro. Living and training with the Helio Gracie for 12 years, Barreto found numerous Vale-Tudo defending the “Gracie” name. When Barreto turned 24 he opened his first academy “Academia Alvaro Barreto, now known as “Corpo-Quatro” (Body of Four) in Copa Cabaña, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many instructors have taught at “Corpo-Quatro” --Pedro Sauer, Sylvio Behring, Sergio Souza “Bolão” and many more.
In 1967, Alvaro Barreto, Helio Gracie, João Alberto, and Helcio Leal Binda formed the first Jiu-Jitsu Federation in Brazil and established the belt ranking progression.
