United States of America (Press Release) April 21, 2008 --
ARCATA - Starting May 1, customers at TaoReiki Holistic Services can choose to pay with Humboldt Exchange Community Currency on all purchases. TaoReiki will accept up to 50% in Community Currency, becoming the 37th business to welcome the colorful local money as payment.
TaoReiki Holistic Services provides a variety of services including holistic consulting, massage and bodywork, Reiki, and classes and seminars on health and self maintenance.
Holistic health consulting is a system of wellness care which fosters a cooperative relationship among all those involved, leading towards optimal attainment of physical, mental emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health.
It emphasizes the need to look at the whole person, including analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, social, spiritual and lifestyle values. It encompasses all stated modalities of diagnosis and treatment including conventional, alternative and complimentary health practices. Holistic consulting focuses on education and responsibility for personal efforts to achieve balance and well being. Incorporated with bodywork, holistic consulting provides a framework for health maintenance and personal growth.
The Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Project is a local effort to promote economic sustainability in Humboldt County. Community Currency works just like U.S. dollars, except that it doesn't leave Humboldt County. Because it remains local, Community Currency strengthens the local economy by requiring the wealth it represents to circulate within our community.
'"Community Currency never drains away to distant parts of the country - these dollars support Humboldt County by promoting local businesses," says Bruce Anderson, owner of TaoReiki Holistic Services. "We are proud to invest in our local economy by accepting Community Currency."
Currently, over 37 businesses in Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville, and Blue Lake accept Community Currency. Additionally, another 50-60 individuals offer services and goods through the bimonthly Community Currency Directory, which includes classified listings as well as information about the Humboldt Exchange. Over the past year, two to three businesses have joined the Humboldt Exchange with each new issue.
"The Humboldt Exchange helps our community recognize and support local economic activity," said Shannon Tracey, business coordinator for the Humboldt Exchange. "We know that a dollar spent at local businesses is seven times more likely to recirculate in the community. By using Community Currency, businesses and customers make a commitment to Humboldt County by dedicating a portion of their money to the local economy."
Local currencies like the Humboldt Exchange were commonly used during the Great Depression, when the U.S. dollar failed and local communities had to create their own systems for trade. In the past twenty years, local currencies have reappeared in over a dozen communities around the country as part of the movement to support local economies.
