San Antonio-based medical staffing firm names winner of healthcare scholarship created in memory of RN who died from cancer & left legacy of providing compassionate care to others

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 21, 2008) ~ InGenesis Medical Staffing announces that Nicole van Hell of San Antonio, Texas, has been chosen as the first recipient of its “Talitha M. Karstens, R.N., Oncology Scholarship.” She will receive a tuition scholarship from InGenesis President Veronica Edwards at an upcoming private lunch held in her honor.
InGenesis established this annual scholarship in 2007 in memory of InGenesis employee Talitha Karstens, R.N. “Talitha always went out of her way to provide warm-hearted personal care for her patients, even though secretly she was struggling to survive,” recalls InGenesis President Veronica Edwards. “Shortly after losing a long battle with cancer on January 26, 2007, she was posthumously recognized as a 2007 ‘Health Care Hero’ by the San Antonio Business Journal.” (SABJ published a two-page profile about Talitha, and presented her mother with an award at its “Health Care Hero” banquet.)
Nicole, a full-time student, plans on becoming certified as a Licensed Vocational Nurse after completing her studies at Texas Careers (a San Antonio-based nursing vocational school) in April 2009. She lives in south San Antonio with her proud mother, Mrs. Yvonne van Hell.
Scholarship judges (which included Talitha’s mother) had high praise for the well-written essay Nichole submitted detailing her desire to take care of people coping with cancer and other serious illnesses. “We were very moved by her story of how watching her grandfather bravely fight cancer influenced her to pursue a career in healthcare,” continues Edwards. “I believe she is an ideal person to continue Talitha’s legacy of providing selfless, compassionate service to others.”
Nicole says she is both “honored” and “thankful” to receive this scholarship. “It’s a comfort like no other to know there are people in this world—like those at InGenesis—who want to help students dedicated to the goal of bettering the lives of others through the medical field.”
