The IPL is a professional Twenty 20 format of cricket. With the endorsement of India’s premier cricketing authority, the BCCI, the IPL cricket in India got its approval from the International Cricket Council and is an internationally recognized cricketing event in the Twenty 20 format. IPL cricket was originally targeted at its counterpart Indian Cricket League formed by the former Indian Cricket legend, Kapil Dev. However, right from its announcement, the IPL outperformed the ICL in every aspect.
IPL cricket in India is a multi-billion dollar affair super-loaded with glamour, entertainment, cricket and passion. There will be 59 matches in 44 days, spreading out the ultimate in cricket fiesta for all the cricket fans in India and abroad. IPL is basically league cricket like the English premier league for football. Every team composes of cricketing stars from all around the globe combined with the boys of Indian domestic cricket. Lalit Modi, who is the vice president of BCCI, has been named the chairman of the IPL cricket. Being the world’s richest cricket league, the IPL cricket in India is going to offer a bonanza of US$ 12 Million as the prize money for the winning team. The runners-ups will get US$ 6 Million. The two teams which lose the semifinals will earn US$ 3 Million each. There is something for everybody - the team which finishes last will also receive attractive prize money of US$ 1 Million.
As far as the team composition is concerned, each team participating in the IPL cricket can induct maximum of eight foreign players, out of which four players may be selected for each match. The teams should also have a minimum of four players from their region and four under-22 players. The players from respective regions might be the iconic players or national/local tournament players. A total of eight teams representing various regions in India are participating in IPL. Every team in the IPL cricket in India will have to play against the 7 teams in home and outside.
The title sponsor for the IPL cricket in India was won by the Indian real estate tycoon, DLF Universal. The exclusive title sponsorship was won by DLF for US$ 50 Million. Hence, the IPL cricket is also called DLF IPL cricket. The exclusive right for the television broadcast was won by the Sony television Network for a period of 10 years with the bid amount of $1.026 billion.
