The American Academy of Disaster Medicine Endorses AMA Core Competency for Disaster Medicine
The American Academy of Disaster Medicine issued a position paper endorsing the Core Competency document recently published by the American Medical Association. According to the American Academy of Disaster Medicine, “the AMA core competencies offer a minimum level of skill to which every healthcare provider regardless of chosen profession should aspire.” The American Academy of Disaster Medicine notes that, “the AMA core competencies are a subset of the comprehensive competencies required by the American Academy of Disaster Medicine for physician board certification in disaster medicine by the American Board of Disaster Medicine.”
The AMA core competency document was prepared as a guide to the standardization of the joint AMA and National Disaster Life Support Educational Consortium health professional training programs. The American Academy of Disaster Medicine encourages all healthcare providers to receive AMA / NDLSEC training in Basic Disaster Life Support. The American Academy of Disaster Medicine further urges physicians and nurses to pursue Advanced Disaster Life Support training.
The American Academy of Disaster Medicine also called for a comprehensive and inclusive cross reference document including disaster healthcare competencies from the AMA, the American Osteopathic Association and the American Academy of Disaster Medicine.
