Guerrera Goes Green in Groton New York

May 1, 2008

Artist Tania Guerrera donates art for the ecologically themed Go Green art exhibit at the Main Street Gallery in Groton New York.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 1, 2008 -- Visual artist Tania Guerrera is a Puerto Rico born artist living and working in New York. Her art is often known for its strong political statements. She has exhibited her work at politically themed shows like Justice for All?: Artists Reflect on the Death Penalty and a number of rallies for political death row prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. This time with the Go Green show, she uses her creative talents to comment on the ecological status of Vieques.

Artists and the general public worldwide were invited to participate by sending in handwritten or typed words in any language about the environment. The donated work will not be returned, since it will be part of a larger installation.

Tania Guerrera’s piece, made specifically for the Go Green exhibit, is a collage with handwritten commentary describing the conditions that led to the present status on the small island. Vieques, an island of the coast of Puerto Rico was occupied during the 1940’s and used by the US Navy for target practice. The bombings in Vieques ceased during 2003, yet they have left parts of the island contaminated and the people of Vieques with abnormally high cases of cancer.

Tania Guerrera exclaimed, “I have been at a loss as to how to express my frustration with the condition of the people in Vieques, this exhibit became an outlet for me to communicate peacefully my disappointment with the US government’s treatment of Puerto Ricans living in Vieques.”

According to the Main Street Gallery website: “The complete space of the gallery will become an installation where one message is heard "GO GREEN". The aim of this show is to let the public voice their concerns about the environment. If there is enough response, this installation will become a touring exhibition.”

The Main Street Gallery is a privately run gallery located in the village of Groton, NY. Artists Roger and Adrienne Bea Smith are directors of the gallery. The Main Street Gallery is "Cozy and Soho-esque", according to Molly English, Editor-in-Chief, Syracuse New Times. Furthermore, "What the Smiths are doing ... is courageous and exciting", said, Katherine Rushworth, Art Critic, Syracuse Post Standard/Stars. The show promises that “Through people power the message GO GREEN will be unstoppable.”
