There are some automobile brands that did not withstand the test of time. For the owners who bought vehicles from these brands it is hard to locate performance and replacement parts for their car. Unfortunately, this is the case for Geo automobile owners. Geo is a short-lived car brand that began in 1989. In 1989, General Motors invested in producing an additional line-up of cars. The vehicles were made to compete in the Japanese import market. The cars produced were branded by the name Geo.. Car engineers were hired from other brands. Some of the prominent Geo designs were patterned by engineers from Isuzu, Daewoo and Suzuki. It was eventually absorbed by the Chrysler Corporation in 1998.
Its car line-up included the Metro, the Spectrum, the Tracker, the Storm and the only GM patented car - the Prizm. The Prizm was sold to Chevrolet in 2001. The Geo Metro was a sub-compact vehicle available in different styles (sedan, hatchback and convertible). The Geo Tracker was a sports/utility vehicle that was marketed as unique and trendy. Its production halted in 2004. The Geo Spectrum did not perform much better in the market. Spectrum production stopped around a year after its release date. The Geo Storm, a three door hatchback, lasted only from 1990 to 1993.
There were many reasons as to why Geo failed. Some of these reasons are (1) Steady decline in overall sales (2) Consistent decline in consumer interest and finally (3) Poor name and design recognition. Geo failed to compete against the Japanese import cars. Engineering lacked innovation and design savvy. The demise of the company was seen as inevitable during the mid 90s.
To add to this string of losses, present Geo owners are tasked to find Geo parts. Of course, car owners need replacements and parts for enhancements. Geo parts production ceased along with its vehicle manufacturing activities. Geo factories are located outside US territories, making it harder for Geo owners to locate parts. This makes maintenance and enhancement a distant dream for Geo owners. The Geo parts catalogue features a wide range of products; headlights, side mirrors, bumpers, etc. But because these products are just excess stock, their performance might be compromised.
