FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 5, 2008 --
As always with the Donkeyfish Poker Week in Review we start out with the biggest cashes of the week by our forum members, and once again, we were not disappointed. Josh “A_Ivanovich” Crawford has been out in Las Vegas with quadducks and DirtyTowel for the WSOP Circuit event at Ceasars. Ivan got DFP off to a great week by final tabling event number 10, a $500 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha tournament. The final table played out on Sunday and out of 129 players, Josh took an impressive 4th place for a total of $4,889. Congrats and ROOOOOOOAAAAARRRRR!!! Also on Sunday, Alex “BigSlick” Keating continued his hot tournament streak by making another big final table, this time taking 3rd in Full Tilt Poker’s 33k guarantee. The buy-in was $109 with one rebuy and one add-on allowed, and Alex took down $7,877 for his 3rd place finish. Last but certainly not least, DonkeyFish Poker member “F That” just missed out on a 5-figure cash when he won his second $50,000 guarantee tournament on Poker Stars in the last two months. This time his 1st place finish was good enough for $9,555 and the top cash of the week.
In what is definitely the biggest news of the week in poker, Harrah’s announced Thursday that the final table of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event will be delayed 16 weeks to accommodate a “near live” broadcast by ESPN. After the 10th place finisher busts, the tournament will be suspended for 117 days, resuming on November 9th for the final table, which will be broadcast on ESPN with a 2-hour delay. From those 10 players, they will play down to the final two. Then, they will again stop the tournament and reconvene the next night for heads-up play. Overall this decision has garnered mixed reviews, not only from the poker community in general, but from individuals as well.
2004 champion Greg Raymer had this to say. "It might be huge for the continued growth of poker; however, the down side is this long gap allows the players to become completely different people between the time they make the final table and when they play it," says Raymer, a member of Team PokerStars. While poker pro Daniel Negreanu applauds the timetable, he also says it will make for a "different dynamic" at the final table. "You're going to see some really kind of more sophisticated play," he says. "They're (the players at the final table) going to watch the ESPN broadcasts and go, 'Oh, did you notice that? When he does this, he's bluffing,' ".Negreanu is on the WSOP Player Advisory Council, which gave its blessing on this change. Other members of the PAC include Jennifer Harman and Robert Williamson III.
A statement released by Harrah’s, said the 16-week gap between the “end” of this summer’s WSOP and the main event’s conclusion in November will give the players an “unprecedented opportunity to capture the world’s attention” with the help of ESPN and the world’s media outlets. They believe it will help create buzz by giving poker fans the opportunity to speculate on who will win the main event while it’s being broadcast, instead of talking about who already won. It will also give the players more time to secure endorsements for the final table, as well as line up poker coaches and study their opponents, not to mention rest up from the intense marathon of play that the WSOP main event is known for.
Although the players will have to wait over 3 months to find out who will take home the lions share of what is sure to be another monstrous field, the final nine won’t be leaving Las Vegas without at least a portion of their payday. All nine will receive ninth-place prize money on July 14, and the rest of the final table payouts will be put in an interest-bearing account. The interest earned will be added to the final-table prize pool as a bonus. Please join the discussion on the Donkeyfish Poker forums and give us your opinion today!
