Hypoallergenic formulas containing fragrance can irritate eczema reports study.

Researchers recently found that the widespread use of fragrance-containing products is likely the most important reason for the high impact of fragrance allergy among eczema and contact dermatitis sufferers. “At some point outbreaks would find me in bandages on my arms and/or legs,” states eczema-prone C. R. Ellsworth.
A newly published 15 year study found that 14.6 per cent of the 10,128 patients tested had an allergic reaction to at least one of the fragrance ingredients tested. The study was published in the March edition of the highly regarded and peer reviewed medical journal, Contact Dermatitis. Over the 15 year study period, fragrance contact allergy has shown a fluctuating trend with allergic reactions were found to be common in both men and women.
“The challenge I speak of started as an innocuous dime sized spot,” reports Ellsworth. “While not a life threatening malady I was to find over time that it can be much more than an inconvenience.”
The study commented that allergenic fragrance chemicals were found not only in fine fragrances but also in a wide range of cosmetic, household, industrial products and even topical medications. Together with preservative agents, they are the most important sensitizing culprits in cosmetic products.
“Manufacturers may label and advertise their cosmetics as hypoallergenic or make similar claims without any supporting evidence,” reports Margaret Morrison of the FDA's Office of Public Affairs. “Consumers will have no assurance that such claims are valid.” Amazingly, in the USA there are no FDA regulations governing the use of the phrase hypoallergenic or sensitive, any cosmetic or pharmaceutical manufacturer can claim this on a label regardless of the product formulation.
In a recent comparison of leading brands, Bentlin Products the manufacturer of Exederm, highlighted several well known brands labeled either ‘sensitive’ or ‘hypoallergenic’ but which actually contained fragrance, colors or potentially harsh preservatives.
The problem of allergic contact dermatitis can be particularly difficult for those with eczema or sensitive skin.
