SANTA CRUZ FILM FESTIVAL—May 5, 2008—A pair of talented filmmakers take on love, midlife, real estate, and other unfathomable mysteries in Limbo Lane, a sophisticated new short comedy film debuting at the Santa Cruz Film Festival today.
With the real estate market in free-fall, Paul— a self-professed man of science— is desperate to sell his home. Reluctantly, he takes the advice of his free-spirited neighbor, Jim, and buries a statue of St. Joseph in his backyard. Catholic folklore has it that St. Joe can do the trick. No sooner is the patron saint beneath the sod than Paul is slammed by a string of bad luck. After wrestling with his beliefs, Paul takes his problems to his childhood priest, but matters only get worse. Soon Paul is confronted with a choice: sell his house, or save his sanity?
“This movie is all about people’s belief systems,” says co-writer/producer Jim Rizor. “There may be no logic to life, but there is certainly no logic to the real estate market. And Limbo Lane comes straight out of real life.”
Rizor and co-writer/director Paul Hendry based Limbo Lane on events unfolding as Rizor attempted to sell his home during the California market meltdown. There was a freak snowfall. A broken leg. And the maddening enigma of why the neighbor’s dilapidated “fixer-upper” got offers, but Rizor’s pristine palace sat ignored.
“The housing market was going to hell, and it almost took me with it,” Rizor says. “I began to wonder if there were supernatural powers at work that were beyond my control.”
The triumph of science provides only a thin veneer of reason to protect fragile humans from life’s ups and downs. When that veneer cracks, chaos reigns. The good news: It’s always good for a laugh.
Rizor’s statue of St. Joseph is still buried in the backyard, and the house still hasn’t sold.
