China’s huge consumer market and large manufacturing base are rapidly growing in importance worldwide. “Searching the Chinese patent database and analyzing patent documents from a strategy perspective is what we are focusing on. We started out by helping Western law firms and corporations to better understand Chinese prior art. We soon realized that it is imperative for patent and non-patent searches to be conducted in Mandarin because coverage in English is minimal. In order to cater efficiently to the needs of domestic and foreign clients, a patent research professional should be fluent in Mandarin and English, and should also have a sound technical background. In China, patent databases and several non patent databases are available online in Mandarin, and Evalueserve’s multilingual team conducts searches in all databases including the China Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. Since complete English translations of Chinese patents are usually not available online, on-the-ground representation is essential.
