United Kingdom of Great Britain & N. Ireland (Press Release) May 7, 2008 --
Last week's London and local council elections have highlighted the creeping failure of British politics. Even the celebrity of Boris Johnson cannot disguise the lack of participation in the political process and the collapse of confidence in the three main parties. Yet the alternatives are marred by extremism, racism and an obsession with issues like immigration and Europe.
The current vacuum in politics will create a dangerous instability unless we act to make politics work again. David Cameron's Conservatives are merely treading the same path taken by the Labour party more than a decade ago. What we need instead is real reform that offers people a future.
New Party Spokesman, David Pinder:
“We need a party that is going to address the real issues faced by local communities: how to break the cycle of poverty, welfare, despair and crime in our inner cities and outer estates; how to channel the talent and initiative of our young people; and how to re-engage people with the political process before they turn to extremism.”
The New Party project will be doing three things in the coming months: (1) highlighting concrete initiatives, in Britain and elsewhere, showing how we can tackle the problems facing our communities; (2) organising public meetings and local 'meetups' around the country to encourage those with an interest in building a progressive, non-extremist party; (3) recruiting and training candidates to stand in future local elections.
Notes for editors:
1. The New Party is a project to create a grassroots political movement based upon progressive and non-extremist principles and dedicated to demonstrating practical alternatives through local action.
2. At an appropriate time in the near future we will announce the name for the new party.
3. In electoral terms, our focus at present will be limited to local elections in areas where we have a presence. We are not competing for national office.
4. Turnout in last week's local elections was around 35 per cent.
5. David Pinder can be contacted for interview through our office (details below).
