Pro-Family, Pro-Spirit… Pro-Choice?
K. L McLoughlin gives voice to this segment of the population in Baby Steps (May 2008.) Baby Steps is the story of Lynda Blake, a deeply spiritual forty-something widow raising her teenage son in northern California. One unexpected day, she helps her son’s classmate through a heated crowd of protesters at a women’s clinic, sparking a chain of events that will forever change Lynda’s life. Not only does she meet sexy Dr. Michael Cameron, she is ultimately forced to prove the strength of her convictions.
“With the potential for change in the balance of power of the Supreme Court, Roe v. Wade is more vulnerable than ever,” says McLoughlin. “I think there are a lot of pro-choice women like me who also have a deep faith. The minority of the religious right has a well-organized and powerfully loud voice, but we do not. Baby Steps is my attempt to enter the debate in a fun, entertaining way.”
K. L. Mc Loughlin earned a BA in Linguistics and a BA in Psychology from Carleton University in Ottawa, ON Canada and received her Master’s in Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. After graduate school, Mc Loughlin lived in the San Francisco Bay area for eight years. She now lives in Victoria, BC Canada with her husband and two children where she is working on her second novel.

The media often pits pro-choice women against their religious counterparts, ignoring a key segment of the population: those women who are both pro-choice and maintain a deep faith.
