United States of America (Press Release) May 9, 2008 --
With Mother's Day right around the corner, Sensei Feldt, owner of Samurai Karate Studio, decided to celebrate Mothers Day by holding some special classes.
"We have many great families that support my studio," commented Sensei Feldt. "I wanted to recognize the Mom's who support their children by bringing them to class several times a week and always encouraging their children to do their best!"
The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and the earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, the early Christians in England celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. By a religious order the holiday was later expanded in its scope to include all mothers, and named as the Mothering Sunday.
During the Little Samurai class, which is structured for children ages 4-6, the Moms were invited to participate in warm ups which included a fun game of dodge ball. After the warm up, each child took their Mom to a spot on the mat and pretended they were the instructors for the class. The kids were so excited and the Mom's had a great time.
Sensei Feldt remarked,"The kids were so excited and having a blast teaching their Mom's how to do a front kick, or how to punch. Some of the kids asked me for permission to use some of the kick bags or balls that we use for our karate drills and asked their Mom's to do the same drills. They had such great intensity and were so proud to be showing their Mom's first hand what they do in class."
At the end of class, the children and their Mom's posed for a group picture. Then Sensei Feldt called the kids towards the back of the studio and gave each child a rose. Then each child walked up to their mother and handed them their rose and thanked them for all they do! When class was officiallly over, all the children shared in a treat of some chocolate chip cookie cake!
One of the mothers commented, "This was a real treat for me today! I had no idea how much fun this would be for me and my daughter!"
During the children's class, which is for kids 7-12 years of age, the Mom's participated in warm ups and were teamed up with Sensei Feldt in padded sword sparring contests. There were lots of laughs and high five's in this class as well.
While the martial arts is all about learning self defense and getting fit, developing character is an everyday lesson that Sensei Feldt emphasizes with his students. Said Feldt, "I want the children to think about how supportive their mother's are and the sacrifice they make everyday for them. This was a fun way for the children to appreciate their Mom's in a special kind of way!"
