As a part of this initiative all merchants were required to deploy a security solution to prevent hackers and viruses from corrupting card processing systems’ and endangering the confidentiality of personally-identifiable customer data.
“Before we received the PCI Compliance directive, we weren’t using any security software on our machines. Because we weren’t connected to the Internet, we assumed the data was safe,” Winslow said. “But we realized when we read through the details of the initiative that we really did need to put some measures in place to comply with their rules and protect both ourselves and our customers against breaches in data privacy.”
