May 16, 2008 -- Coconut Creek, Florida – For South Florida’s foster kids, home is a very special word and, for the hundreds of foster children that have come through their doors, SOS Children’s Villages – Florida is a very special place. On April 27, the organization and their community of supporters celebrated their 15th year of service with a “15 and Fabulous” Birthday Bash at Boca West Country Club.
The evening, which included a silent and live auction, dinner, and dancing, raised $510,000 that will help SOS continue to support and nurture all of the children under their care. The annual event provides funding for services and activities such as tutoring, therapy, after school activities, and all of the necessities of being a kid. This year’s proceeds will also help fund scholarships to send some of the SOS kids to summer camp.
Home was a powerful word for everyone on this very special evening. For the children, especially, it meant that they could continue to live in a safe, secure, and positive environment that provides everything that they need to grow up healthy, independent, and happy.
“What impresses me is how much love the children get from SOS. When you meet the kids, sometimes it is hard to believe they went through such hardships because they are so happy. SOS gives them a childhood,” says Gala Co-Chair Cindi Krost. ” My husband and I write checks and go to other fundraisers and I am sure the money they raise helps but, at SOS I get to see it and be a part of the kids lives.”
For special guest and honoree Eduardo Xol, from ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the evening was about sharing a passion for spreading the joy and solitude of home with others. Xol accepted SOS’ “Spirit of Home” award at the gala celebration in recognition of his tireless efforts to help families rebuild their homes on his show. His visit with the children at the SOS Village on Saturday was so moving that he added two walk-on parts on Extreme Makeover for the festivity’s live auction to help raise money for the kids.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to share this wonderful occasion with SOS and I am humbled to be recognized for my efforts to help families in need,” says Xol. “While we have different methods, our goal is the same…to create a new home.”
