The "Big Beef on Brickell Bay"
is "On It's Way"
Brazilian Influence
MIAMI BEACH, FL - 05-16-2008
For those of you who for some unknown reason, hopefully a good one,
missed Danny Hawk's "Back Alley Turf Wars #3" on April 26th, I will
fill you in best I can.
The show really took on the spirit of Normandy Gym itself. The crowd
was loud the music was loud, and our boxer's, WOW, young Michael
Oliveira, of Brazilian descent, who celebrated his 18th birthday on the
26th, was matched up against a 25 yr.old boxer from Lauderdale, who
snickered as he entered the ring. He had it in his mind that he was
going to give Michael a present for his birthday. A LOSS. He was in for
the surprise of his life. It was also Oliveira's 1st ever Amateur bout.
Michael took control early, using the skills he has learned well under
the watchful coaching of Danny Hawk. In the second round he rocked his
opponent with an upper-cut followed by a hook to the jaw, seconds later
against the ropes Michael showed his superior endurance by pummeling
his oppenent with lefts and rights,....and lefts and rights. The
referee had to give the Lauderdale Boxer a standing eight count. In the
third round Michael continued the pressure showing agility and
strength. After the judges tally, Michael Oliveira's glove was lifted
in victory and awarded a Gold Medal for his accomplishment. The other
fighter was very upset and showed some poor sportsmanship at first, but
then later congratulated Oliveira and Hawk. The crowd was going nuts
yelling and screaming as if they just had witnessed Joe Louis and one
of his greatest knockouts.
Michael's next bout is on June 21st, 2008.
If that wasn't enough, one of our other young stars, Guillermo
Dapelo, of Uruguayan descent, seemingly overmatched by a bigger
stronger looking opponent. During the first round Guillermo used his
skills the best he knew how but was overwhelmed by his bigger opponent
and could only manage a few counter punches to avoid disaster. As the
second round began Dapelo's instincts came forward and he made up his
mind that he would not be beaten today. He quickened his pace and as
his opponent began to tire, and tried to tie him up in clinches, Dapelo
began to use the skills he had been taught in training. Now on the
attack Dapelo used uppercuts followed by hooks and uppercuts followed
by over the top hooks to bloody the nose of his opponent and nearly
knocked him out. The crowd was yelling "Get Him Guillermo" the oohs and
aahs of every punch that landed, WOW again, better than a Pro Match. The
third round, now feeling confident that he could win Guillermo had a
spring in his step and overwhelmed his opponent swinging the tally and
the votes of the judges. He then heard, the Winner..., out of the Blue
corner Guillermo Dapelo....I must note that it really made us proud
that our boxers represented Normandy Gym so bravely and showed the
other gyms that the "Train Hard, Be Ready" motto lives and thrives in
ONLY ONE PLACE, Danny Hawk's Normandy Gym. A million thanks to our gym
members and the sponsors, without them we could never have pulled off
the event.
I almost forgot...not really...The Big Beef on Brickell Bay is on it's
way..................read about it below.
