Dr Ira L Shapira is a pioneer of Dental Sleep Medicine and was the first Sleep Apnea Dentist in Chicagoland. In the 1980's he was a visiting Assistant Professor at Rush Medical School where he did research into jaw position and sleep apnea. He was a charter member of the Sleep Disorder Dental Society the first organization dedicated to Dental Sleep Medicine. He became a credentialed member of that organization. Dr Shapira is one of the first Dentists to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is also a founding member of the Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea.
Dr Shapira treated patients at Rush in the the 1990's and continues to treat patients in his Gurnee, Illinois office. He teaches courses to dentists who come from across the United States to learn Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr Shapira is a strong supporter of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and a Member of the American Academy of
Sleep Medicine and of the National Sleep Foundation.
The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine featured Dr Shapira at several medical conferences where he lectured on Anti-Aging Dentistry and taught physicians courses on he diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea. Cpap is considered the gold standard of treatment for sleep apnea but studies have shown that only23-45% of patients actually use CPAP.
