United States of America (Press Release) May 23, 2008 --
San Francisco, CA, May 23, 2008. According to several new research studies, gay and lesbian relationships are stronger than straight relationships in many ways.
Dr. John Gottman, of the Gottman Institute, is a world-renowned researcher and author of numerous books on relationships, based on his 35 years of research. He is a married heterosexual. His research findings point out similarities and differences between straight and gay couples, and John Gottman, himself, stated that straight couples have a lot to learn from gay couples.
Other recent studies show that same sex couples automatically experience a greater sense of compatibility due to the fact that less “translation” is needed between the sexes (they have a communication advantage as compared to opposite sex couples), that same sex couples use more humor and affection when they argue, are less controlling and take things less personally than opposite sex couples. Also, the studies show that same sex partners are generally happier than their straight siblings who married, and that they tend to be more mature, considerate and fair towards each other.
The work of the Gay Couples Institute, located in downtown San Francisco, will be to continue the research started by the Gottman Institute specific to gay and lesbian relationships. It will also offer gay and lesbian couples the therapy designed by Dr. John Gottman & psychologist wife Dr. Julie Gottman.
“The Gay Couples Institute also brings the science of psychology to the art of therapy. This institute is the first gay/lesbian clinic to employ stress relief technology to help couples monitor tension levels during therapy sessions as well as at home,” say Salvatore Garanzini, MFT, Executive Director.
The Institute gives free online web seminars on topics such as “fair fighting”, repairing recurrent conflicts, and dating, as well as, current research articles/blogs. The Institute also offers talks to local organizations around the bay area, as well as, weekend couples workshops.
The Gay Couples InstituteTM is staffed by licensed lesbian and gay psychotherapists trained by the Gottman Institute. Couples are offered the option of weekly or bi-weekly appointments, or more condensed and intensive relationship repair counseling sessions.
