United States of America (Press Release) May 28, 2008 --
Indian Beach, NC May 28, 2008. Because women are more often the victims of a violent crime, WomenOnGuard.com donates 25 products to a different women’s crisis center around the country on a monthly basis. WomenOnGuard.com is an e-commerce website that sells non lethal, self defense products such as Mace, pepper spray, stun guns, the Taser C2, personal alarms and home protection products. The site includes hotlines, safety tips, helpful links and a Blog.
Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault operates a 24-hour crisis line through which callers receive immediate crisis intervention and assistance from crisis staff and specially trained volunteer advocates. The Center has partnerships with several organizations to aid in law enforcement, sexual assault medical forensic examinations for evidence collection and hospitals for medical attention. Victims and family or significant others of victims receive psychotherapy services by Master’s level therapists. The clinical staff is specially trained in areas of trauma and sexual violence.
Susan Eaton, co-owner of WomenOnGuard.com states, “We receive calls from customers who are not only concerned for their own safety but for the safety of their family members. Parent’s call worried about their daughters attending college for the first time. They are aware that college women are 4 times more likely to become a victim of a sexual assault.” She also mentioned, “We had a caller a few weeks ago that sent a self defense product to his sister because she was in an abusive relationship. Many customers from Florida have been inquiring about our products due to the recent shopping mall attacks that have occurred down there.”
Martha Z. Martinez, the other co-owner mentioned, “These occurrences are nationwide. As you know, women are sexually assaulted in small towns as well as large cities, in commute, while hiking, at work or at home. This time of the year, however, during spring and summer, there are studies that show that sexual assaults are more common.” She states, “People are socializing and going outdoors more often. There are many festivities and parties as well. Due to the increase in socializing and especially drinking, a person is more prone to let their guard down and become vulnerable to an attack. Predators are aware of these circumstances and see a chance to inflict their violence.”
Below are a few appropriate safety tips for that WomenOnGuard.com offers on their website:
• When in bars or clubs, always get your drink directly from the bartender and do not take your eyes off the bartender or your order; don't use the waitress or let somebody go to the bar for you.
• At parties, only accept drinks in closed containers: bottles, cans or tetra packs. Never leave your drink unattended or turn your back on your table.
• Do not drink from open beverage sources like punch bowls, pitchers or tubs.
