4 June, 2008 – BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. will avoid a trial with Visto Corp. after a Canadian court ruled the privately held California-based company infringed on three RIM patents. As a result of the litigation, Visto will have to pay royalties relating to three patents held by RIM.
According to the CEO of mobile e-mail software Synchronica, which built its Mobile Gateway product exclusively on open industry standards such as Push IMAP, SyncML/OMA DS and CalDAV, this lawsuit is just another instance of the folly of the patent craze stifling the IT sector and the mobile email market in particular:
“Patent wars rarely pay off. Open industry standards and interoperability, rather than proprietary protocols and patents are the way to make mobile email successful in the mass-market,” comments Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica, “Open standards do not belong to anybody and can be implemented free of charge.
