Oman, Sultanate of (Press Release) June 8, 2008 --
This assessment is aimed to discover whether shoppers are at risk of developing the disease or suffer from high blood pressure.
Screening will involve answering a few questions and undergoing a blood-glucose test and blood pressure measurement. The results will be available at once and on the spot medical staff will be available for advice to the public. It is expected that many people in Muscat could be suffering from diabetes or high blood pressure without knowing it.
The test will not serve as an actual diagnosis, more of an indicator that one should seek further medical advice. Dr. Pavan Kumar Shrivastava, Medical Director of Welcare DTC -Oman said, "Along with the large number of people who don't recognise the symptoms of diabetes and blood pressure problems, certain groups are also more likely to develop the condition. With our new free screening service, it couldn't be easier to check out if you could be at risk. For diabetes, this is a vitally important health check as screening can help to indicate the likelihood you have, or may develop diabetes. Once diagnosed, diabetes can be effectively controlled with small lifestyle changes or medication. Similarly, high blood pressure, when undetected or uncontrolled is one of the biggest causes of death and disability through stroke, heart attack and heart diseases. Hence, we hope that the customers will take the opportunity to have this quick, free and painless blood sugar and blood pressure check during this period."
The assessment clinic will run in each of the Al Fair supermarket locations in Muscat from 5 pm to 8 pm as per the following schedule - 4 and 5 June at Al-Fair in Madinat Qaboos; 6 and 7 June at Al-Fair at Sarooj Center; 11 and 12 June at Al-Fair, Capital Commercial Center (CCC), Qurum and on 13 and 14 June at Al Fair in the Markaz Al Bahja Mall.
