New Zealand (Press Release) June 9, 2008 --
Every parent wants the best for their child and Christchurch mum Daneen Lascelles is no exception.
When she decided to produce her own line of baby blankets after becoming frustrated by her inability to find a traditional New Zealand-made wool blanket for her new-born daughter, Samantha, she knew nothing but the best would do.
She insisted the blankets were made from 100% merino wool and that each blanket was edged with luxurious French satin. The result is a product which not only looks and feels good but is environmentally-friendly and practical.
Eighteen months has passed since The Snuggly was conceived and Daneen has sent her first export order off to Australia. She is now preparing to break into the US market, where there is growing demand for high-end luxury baby products made from natural fibres.
“The US market is potentially huge for me,’’ says Daneen. “Every parent wants the best for their child and Americans will love the thought of being able to wrap their baby in a blanket made from 100% New Zealand high country merino wool.
“It’s like having Mother Nature wrapped around you,’’ says Daneen, whose father was a wool buyer and whose grandparents were farmers. “Babies love a sense of weight over them. When they are in the womb they’re pretty snug so I think they feel quite comforted when they’re well wrapped up.’’
Wool, too, has the added advantage over modern synthetic materials like polar fleece in that it allows the skin to breathe and is perfect for controlling a baby’s temperature.
Daneen’s children’s blankets are made in South Canterbury and come in a range of colours. While the blankets are ideally suited for bassinettes and cots Daneen has designed them so that they are large enough to fit a single bed so children can keep them as they grow.
“I wanted to create something that was timeless and that would last a life-time,’’ says 37-year-old Daneen, who has no prior experience in the textile industry, having previously worked in marketing hotels. “I wanted a blanket that Samantha would treasure for years to come.’’
Daneen’s blankets are available at selected stockists nationwide and can be ordered from www.covermeblankets.co.nz.
