United States of America (Press Release) June 10, 2008 --
Arlington, VA -- June 10, 2008 -- For many, Independence Day conjures up thoughts of barbecues, baseball games, fireworks displays, and other time-honored American traditions. As a celebration of the birth of our democracy, July Fourth is also a day for reflection upon the freedoms that American citizens enjoy, and the importance of preserving them for future generations.
“The freedoms that we commemorate on the Fourth of July are the lifeblood of this country,” says former Maryland Congressman Tom McMillen. “Ironically, many of the freedoms that make us great also leave America vulnerable.”
As Chairman and CEO of Homeland Security Capital Corporation (“HSCC”), Congressman McMillen has dedicated himself to providing disaster protection for the very citizens he represented during his three terms in Congress. HSCC, through its portfolio of companies, provide both prevention and response services for disasters of all kinds, be they natural or man-made.
“In some ways, our celebration of Independence Day has returned to its Revolutionary roots,” says Congressman McMillen. “Our nation began in a spirit of homeland defense, with the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. In the aftermath of September 11th, however, today we find ourselves thinking more and more about homeland security.”
In addition to detection and deterrence, Congressman McMillen underscores the importance of improved response capabilities in order to minimize damage should an accidental disaster or large-scale attack occur. “If a nuclear incident initiated by terrorists or a nuclear reactor meltdown occurs on American soil, response measures would be crucial for minimizing impact,” explains Congressman McMillen. “In the event of such a terrible occurrence, the prompt removal of radioactive debris and area clean up would be imperative.”
Congressman McMillen points to the development of screening devices for dirty bombs in outdoor areas as the kind of advances that will continue to keep American citizens safe. Still, with threats ranging from chemical to radiological to nuclear, swift and effective response cannot take a backseat to preventative measures. HSCC’s portfolio company, Safety and Ecology Corporation, currently maintains the largest radiological remediation contract in the U.S.
“With all that Americans have to celebrate on July Fourth, it is important that we reflect on how to protect our democracy for our children and grandchildren,” says Congressman McMillen. “That is what independence is truly all about.” Visit www.hscapcorp.com to learn more.
