It has been reported in sleep literature that 80% of children with ADHD have sleep apnea, upper airway resistance and snoring. The single most important nutrient for all humans is Oxygen. We will die if we go for only a few minutes without it. Sleep apnea is the repetitive cessation of breathing due to lack of effort (central apnea) or more frequently due to airway obstruction or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This repetitive disruption of airflow disturbs sleep patterns and can result in disturbed sleep.

Research has shown that this can cause permanent changes in brain development. The disruption of normal sleep can have widespread problems for children and adolescents.
Disruption of REM sleep or rapid eye movement sleep can interfere with learning and memory. This is especially true in young children. Disruption of slow wave sleep and especially Delta sleep can affect hormones and metabolism. Growth hormone is known to be produced primarily in Delta Sleep.

The University of Chicago research showed that middle-aged males with apnea gain their fatty bellies as a result of loss of Delta Sleep.

The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine held an excellent meeting in Baltimore from June 6-8. Dr Paola Pirelli gave an excellent lecture on the Orthodontic and Orthopedic Treatment of OSA Children.

She cited an article by Guilleminault et al from the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine that stated "Children suffering from mild OSAS show an obstructive phenomenon with nasal septum deviation associated with a narrow upper jaw.

The mouth and the nose are very much like a two story building. The downstairs is the mouth and the second floor is the nose. The roof of the mouth is the floor of the nose. Orthopedic development that leads to a narrow mouth and nasal cavity can be corrected with orthodontic and orthopedic treatment of the mouth.

Rapid maxillary expansion is probably the best long-term treatment option and should be undertaken as early as possible according to Dr Pirelli. An excellent article was published in Sleep, volume 27, Number 4/June 15, 2004. The article was "Rapid Maxillary Expansion in Children with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome” Removal of the Tonsils and Adenoids is usually the first line treatment of sleep apnea and snoring. Dr Pirelli strongly supports combination therapy utilizing both Rapid Maxillary Expansion and removal of tonsils and adenoids that obstruct the airway. She feels and presented data that RME should usually precede tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

Dr Jim Garry a pediatric dentist produced a flow chart that showed how abnormal nasal breathing could lead to multiple problems throughout the life of children with restricted nasal breathing. Many of the adults with apnea, reflux cardiac and vascular problems started with problems that were easily solvable via intervention with orthodontic and orthopedic treatment as children.

More information is available at I HATE CPAP at http://www.ihatecpap.com. Dr Ira L Shapira the founder of I HATE CPAP LLC became interested in sleep apnea because his 3-year-old son Billy has severe snoring and night sweats. When he presented his concerns to Billy's physicians his concerns were dismissed. At 5 years old Billy was held back from starting kindergarten. Dr Shapira and his wife Elise took matters in their own hands and took Billy to see Dr Rosalind Cartwright at Rush Medical School's Sleep Center. It turned out Billy had sleep apnea and he underwent tonsil and adenoid removal as well as orthodontic treatment. He went from being held back in school to being a straight "A" student and actually graduated college Magna Cum Laude with a double major and a double minor. Billy did not need Ritalin or other similar drugs. His drug of choice was Oxygen and good sleep.

The American Academy of Pediatric Medicine says that snoring should never be ignored but seen as a warning flag of possible problems. Past studies have show that children who snore do not do as well in school. 80% of children with ADD and ADHD have apnea.
