United States of America (Press Release) July 2, 2008 --
The message of protecting our environment is not a new one. But in today’s world not only has it arrived at the forefront of our political agendas, but it has also become a part of the stories that we tell our children. This past weekend saw the release of Wall•E, a movie aimed at youths telling the story of a robot left to clean up an Earth left in ruin. Author Matthew R. Milson presents a similar message with his novel Young Arcan and the Garden of Loc, in which the protagonist must set out on a journey to set free the very essence of life as it is drained from the world around him.
“Solving our environmental problems is not something that will happen in this generation. It’s going to take time,” Milson says. “I think to some extent we can’t help but to tell these kinds of stories to our children. It’s a way for us to get an important message across, even warn them.”
Such warnings have been dramatized for years in film, but never so much with an emphasis on younger audiences. Characters such as Wall•E and Young Arcan help to deliver the same message but with a friendlier face and stories that are intended to stay will people for years.
“These stories are not only geared toward kids you know; grownups are enjoying them too. If you can get across a meaningful point to such a wide audience while still entertaining them, then the message will stick with them that much longer,” Milson believes.
Young Arcan and the Garden of Loc is a young adult fantasy novel published in October 2007 by Avari Press. If you would like more information on Matthew R. Milson’s novel or to schedule an interview, please email MatthewRMilson@gmail.com.
