United States of America (Press Release) July 3, 2008 --
Developmental Writing which is otherwise known as Basic Writing is meant to help students come to basic understanding, and familiarity with formal written English. Developmental Writing (DR) students can be categorized in two ways.
First, it refers to students coming straight from high school who did not have a basic competency in formal writen English before graduation and are placed below average on a college writing placement test.
Second, they are non-traditional students who are older than average college freshman and are coming to college for the first time in order to further their education in the hopes of gaining the skills necessary for better employment and earning more money.
By believing that reading is good, writing is creative, DW students are taught how to fall in love with words--and understand the rules of formal written English--syntax, grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, mechanics/composition, organization, and clarity.
DEVELOPMENTAL READING, standing on its own: is designed for students to become more aware of themselves as readers and to develop strategies and skills to meet the demands of college reading.
Like a Creative Writer, the students will learn how to fall in love with words, stories, images, vision and insight, believing that reading is good: that reading enhances knowledge, distils the mind and inoculates the body with the ingredients of life.
