United States of America (Press Release) July 4, 2008 --
All Nippon Airlines (ANA) announced that it will sponsor Sports Camp of America (SCOA), a unique intercultural sports camp in Japan in order to give Japanese elementary and junior high school kids an American-style camp experience without leaving home.
“ANA is pleased to be associated with this worthwhile program that gives Japanese and American students a life-changing opportunity to expand their horizons by experiencing different cultures,” said Mr. Tomonori Ishii, ANA’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Americas.
The campers experience American culture and practice English through playing sports, cheer dance and other camp activities with American camp counselors.
This summer, nine American college students and recent graduates with sports or cheerleading backgrounds have been selected through SCOA’s internship program to come to Japan to be camp counselors. ANA will fly the American camp counselors to Japan from Los Angeles in July.
“SCOA is all about giving Japanese kids a typical American camp experience and inspiring them to learn about other cultures and motivate them to learn English,” said J.R. Best, SCOA’s camp director.
ANA is Japan’s largest domestic airline, offering service 130 routes throughout Japan and 22 international routes including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Washington, DC.
SCOA’s partner in the summer camp is the Japanese non-profit, Kiyosato Educational Experiment Project (KEEP) which has facilities in the mountains of Kiyosato, Yamanashi-ken, two hours west of Tokyo where the camp will be held.
With each camp session lasting two-nights and three-days, this summer SCOA will offer four camp sessions at KEEP: July 21-23; July 23-25: July 28-30; and July 30-August 1. In addition, one camp session will be held in Kamogawa, Chiba-ken on August 3-5.
Additional support for SCOA is provided by the United States Embassy of Japan, the Japan Flag Football Federation (JFFF), NFL Japan and the Japan Cheer Dance Association.
