Explaining the Real Meaning of Yoga around the world

Acclaimed spiritual master Sankarshan Das Adhikari returns to his home base in Austin, Texas, USA, on 7th July 2008, after the 4th successful world tour that took him to several countries 5 continents from April 2008 to July 2008. He undertook similar world tours in 2005, 2006, and 2007, travelling to any place on earth where his students wanted to learn from him. Sankarshan Das is a student of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, and has been practicing Bhakti Yoga, the ancient science of reconnecting to God and His energies by dedicating all of one's energies to His thoughts. He travels with his wife and travelling partner Vishnupriya Devi Dasi.

While the word Yoga has become a household term, and is heavily commercialized around the world, many people are only familiar with the concept of stretching in various gymnastic poses, controlling breathing or meditating within one's mind. It is not known that Bhakti Yoga is described as the topmost yoga system in the Bhagavad Gita, or the Gitopanishad, spoken by Lord Krishna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra over 5000 years ago. Sankarshan Das lovingly explains to his students and anyone who cares to listen how one can enliven even the most mundane activities by engaging oneself in the service of the Supreme. He also explains how one can achieve the ultimate victory through surrender. He also explains how one can live, work, and function in a materialistic society and still remain fully connected to the source of all energies and be fully blissful and happy at all times. He also explains the nature of the living entity, the soul, and the relationship to the Supreme.

Explaining the message propounded by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Bengal, India over 500 years ago, and brought to the west by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in the 1970s, the key to this reconnection is to chant the names of God. Every name of God, since it describes the absolute, is fully empowered to give an experience of the absolute, and has within it the key to all purification, all benedictions, all joy. In addition, the names of God are nondifferent from God directly. A basic idea of Vaishnava philosophy is that the word "God" is quite impersonal and describes a function more than the person. Just as human beings are known by different names and designations according to their activities and relationships, God is known by millions of names, Krishna, Govinda, Allah, Jehovah, Christ... the list is endless and unlimited, just as God is unlimited and infinite.

On this fourth world tour, Sankarshan Das visited the countries Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Peru, and the USA. Within each country, he spent several days lecturing, singing devotional music, taking and accepting Prasadam, or pure vegetarian foodstuffs offered with devotion to Krishna. He also gave one-on-one counselling to both adept and new practitioners of Bhakti Yoga. He travelled by bus, train, plane, car, and even walked where necessary. While on tour, he met with most of his 54 initiated disciples, who are 13th in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of Bhakti, or devotion.

He regularly lectures at universities, colleges, speaks on radio stations, TV stations, leads Kirtan (ecstatic public chanting of names of God), gives discourses, seminars, and holds workshops around the world. He also regularly explains to world audiences how leading a God-centred life will solve the problems of conflict, terrorism, environmental pollution, cheating, crime, and unabated exploitation that brings the world to the brink of untold disasters.

Not affected by opulent austere surroundings, not caring for rich food or simple food, not concerned with whether or not he is offered respect, he soldiers on around the world spreading the Science of Krishna Consciousness, wanting to bring the ultimate bliss to all, regardless of sex, creed, class, race, caste, or any other material designation.

Having pioneered the Internet course "Ultimate Self Realization" that goes out to over 7000 regular readers in over a 100 countries around the world, Sankarshan Das Adhikar reads all his emails personally, and responds to each question directly and individually after meditating upon the real need of the person asking the question. He even features some of these Q&A sessions on his daily Thought for the Day emails. Not shy to take on atheists, the unsure, the people with many doubts, even those who make direct personal attacks, he answers each email with a loving patience of a father teaching a little child. All this email reading and writing happens often on the road, while he is on planes, cars, waiting to travel.
