Wear your consciousness on your sleeve! Conscious Gear Expo NYC 2008 July25th Hip Hop Culture Center

On behalf of Conscious Gear Expo and the Global Artists Coalition, we are pleased to announce the first annual Conscious Gear Expo NYC 2008, a community youth initiative to promote awareness about some of our city’s biggest challenges. We will use the concept of t-shirt design to spread conscious messages representing social issues of great concern to our young people.

Conscious Gear Expo, NYC 2008 will take place at the Hip Hop Culture Center, 2309 Frederick Douglass Blvd., on July 25th, 9:30am – 4:00pm.

This year’s Expo will be co-hosted by youth advocates who will facilitate critical thinking workshops, as well as socially-conscious t-shirt entrepreneurs who will introduce participants to the art of t-shirt design. The workshops will culminate in each participant crafting creative messaging for t-shirts in order to raise awareness about systemic challenges and promising solutions in our communities. We anticipate a dynamic group of participants and stakeholders, including 200 children and young adults, boutique owners, clothing label representatives, and local elected officials.

Conscious Gear Expo is a collaborative led by Joe Rogers, Chief Education Activist of Total Equity Now LLC; Janet Cox, active and devoted member of St. Mark's Methodist Church in Harlem; and Makeba Lloyd, Founder of Butter by Keba and volunteer press secretary to the grassroots organization Harlem 4 Obama.

Our coordinators and affiliates promote constructive and proactive approaches to addressing the social injustices preventing our communities from reaching their full potential. We strongly believe that our youth, empowered with well-honed critical thinking and advocacy skills, are essential partners in the movement for positive social change. Developing the current and future young leaders of our communities ensures all of us a more just and equitable tomorrow.

Thus our mission: “To encourage NYC youth to play an active role in strengthening our communities.”

We are proud to partner with the Hip Hop Culture Center of the Global Artists Coalition to host the inaugural expo in conjunction with its summer youth program. The Expo believes that this is a unique opportunity to encourage positive change among our youth. We actively seek to partner with other organizations and businesses interested in supporting the growth and development of NYC youth.
