The Port of Portland Used Netting to Keep Birds from a Garage Area

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) July 15, 2008 -- PORT OF PORTLAND USES NETTING TO DETER PEST BIRDS

The vehicle garage is an 18,000 sq. ft. area that the Port of Portland uses to store heavy equipment and machinery. The area was recently infested with pest birds, ranging from pigeons to starlings that were making a mess of the stored items within.

Birds had been seeking shelter in the storage area for some years. Scott Sitner, in charge of the inventory and parts crew at the Port of Portland, stated that pest birds “had always been a problem in the area”. Sitner has worked with the Port for nine years.

The Port of Portland was established in 1891, and today owns several marine terminals, airports and business parks. There had been pest bird problems at some of the other port properties, and Sitner knew where to turn for help.

A few years ago, birds had become a major problem at Portland International Airport. Pest birds were nesting on cross beams under the canopy of the airport terminal. Maintenance crews had to constantly clean up the bird droppings to protect travelers. After reviewing options, the port chose to have Bird Net 2000 from Bird-B-Gone, Inc., a leading manufacturer of Bird Control products since 1992, installed under the canopy to create a barrier. The idea was to block the birds from having access to the crossbeams in a way that wouldn’t harm the birds, or compromise the design of the building.

Sitner said, “The canopy project at the Portland airport terminal has worked so well, it not only kept the airport terminal area free from birds, but the net was virtually invisible. You could hardly see it”. Because of this success, Sitner called the Bird-B-Gone engineering & design team to discuss netting the vehicle garage.

Installation of the bird netting in the garage was recently completed, and Sitner has already seen positive results. With so many properties around the Portland area, the Port’s maintenance crew had little time to worry about pest birds. Now that the netting has been installed, they don’t have to …. At all. The birds have flown away, and with them, the cost of having to clean up their mess on a daily basis.

The key to pest bird infestations is using the right product for the right type of bird. There are many different bird control products for many different types of birds. “It can be very confusing, “states Bruce Donoho, owner of Bird-B-Gone. “That’s why we recommend that you e-mail or call our service engineers here at Bird-B-Gone. We’ve been solving pest bird problems for a long time, so it just makes sense to take advantage of our experience. It will save you time, money and frustration.”
